Arc Flash Safety Awareness Training

Arc Flash is arguably the most deadly and least understood hazard faced daily by plant personnel. Forewarned is forearmed.

"Arc Flash Safety Awareness" is a Schneider Electric and CSA Training Program presented by North American Servo (NAS) that provides essential safety awareness to prevent arc flash accidents and explosions that cause more than 2,000 injuries per year. "Arc Flash Safety Awareness" covers lockout/tagout, electrical shock and flash hazard awareness, personal protective equipment, and safe work practices.

Protect Yourself from Arc Flash

In North America, an arc flash explosion sends victims to the burn unit five to ten times a day. An arc flash sends concentrated radiant energy, hot gases, and melting metal outward at 5,000 to 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit That is hotter than the sun. Electrical technicians caught in an arc flash may suffer severe radiation burns, damaged eyesight from the brilliance of the flash, and hearing and brain damage from the accompanying pressure waves of up to 2,000 pounds per square foot.

Your Challenge

Arc flash is a serious hazard with potentially devastating effects. Ensuring worker safety and meeting the challenges of the new arc flash safety requirements can be a difficult task to accomplish in-house without the assistance of resources familiar with industry standards for recommended practices. That is why North American Servo and Schneider Electric are dedicated to teach workers electrical safety.

"The Law"

Section 25. (2) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario states that "...an employer must, (h) take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker;"

What this means is that employers must familiarize themselves with the hazards of their workplace and take reasonable precautions to protect their workers from those hazards. The phrase "every precaution reasonable" means the employer is expected to employ industry best practices in dealing with anticipated hazards.

Section 42.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations for Industrial Establishments in Ontario states that: "...if it is not practical to disconnect electrical installations, equipment or conductors from the power supply before working on, or near, live exposed parts of the installations, equipment or conductors. (2) The worker shall use rubber gloves, mats, shields, and other protective equipment and procedures adequate to ensure protection from electrical shock and burns while performing the work."

As you can see from this rule it is already a requirement for employers to assess the hazards of electrical exposure and provide adequate personal protective equipment in the event an employee is going to be working on energized equipment.
